DISCLAIMER: These notes are from the defunct k8 project which precedes SquirrelJME. The notes for SquirrelJME start on 2016/02/26! The k8 project was effectively a Java SE 8 operating system and as such all of the notes are in the context of that scope. That project is no longer my goal as SquirrelJME is the spiritual successor to it.

I can easily grasp the concepts of using C and assembly to write a kernel, however Java and the JVM is a whole different machine. Java is byte code which could be translated to machine code or interpreted as is. However, there exists the Java Native Interface (JNI). The JNI functions are handled via "native" modifiers on the code being executed. Java is very class centered and requires that some kind of class system is setup for the VM state to be known. However, when the system boots there is none of that and it must be setup. Basically, one would have to write a loader and memory manager in assembly or C then load the Java classes.
